The market buildings were already being used for the intake and distribution of mainly white fish and prawns directly from the harbour. The first building was already insulated and partially temperature controlled and needed both the insulation and the refrigeration plant to be upgraded to meet current modern standards. The second building was not temperature controlled and new insulation and refrigeration equipment were required. The work was phased to allow fish sales to continue in the first market building whilst the second was being upgraded and vice versa.
The original market had been equipped with BITZER open drive compressors that had given many years of satisfactory service. With this experience, and following a visit to a similar installation, the client had no difficulty in accepting Star Refrigeration’s recommendation to use BITZER semi-hermetic compressors for the refurbishment of the two buildings.
To provide the flexibility to accommodate the varying quantities and timings of fish being landed, Star Refrigeration’s designers specified three independent refrigeration systems for each market building. Each system comprises of a BITZER compressor receiver set, fully dressed to Star Refrigeration’s specification at BITZER UK’s Milton Keynes facility prior to delivery. These are linked to very low air velocity evaporators within the market area and air-cooled condensers located on the market roof.
‘’ We specified BITZER because of the long-standing relationship between the two companies and the outstanding performance and reliability of the Bitzer compressor, said John Fraser of Star Refrigeration.’’
