Enhancing electrical grid reliability and safety

Air-moving and power transmission technology company, Bison, has launched a new range of advanced motorised operator solutions designed to boost the reliability, safety, and efficiency of manufacturers’ switchgear systems. As key components in the electrical grid, Bison Gear Motors ensure the safe and dependable operation of transmission and distribution networks.

Switchgear OEMs face increasing pressure to deliver systems that combine precision, automation, and resilience. Fast and accurate circuit control, remote operation for centralised management, and smooth switching to minimise disruption are now essential. Automation, in particular, is helping to reduce human error and enhance overall grid reliability.

Bison’s solutions are designed with these demands in mind. The company’s motors feature rugged gearing for long-term durability, compact designs for space-limited installations, and optimised performance that combines low amp draw with high torque output. They operate smoothly and quietly in extreme temperatures as low as -40°F and are tested to deliver 99.99% uptime.

In addition to proven product performance, Bison works closely with OEMs to refine and integrate systems. Support includes adapting travel limits, adding position sensing circuits, and developing hermetically sealed stainless-steel housings for underwater applications. This collaborative approach ensures customers can not only meet current requirements but also adapt quickly to changing regulations and industry expectations.

Bison’s product portfolio for switchgear applications includes:

  • DC PowerStar Right Angle Gear Motors, compact and efficient with 7–180 RPM and 55–900 in-lbs of torque, featuring a hollow output shaft for easy integration.
  • DC 562 Series Offset Parallel Shaft Gear Motors, durable and adaptable, providing 1–65 RPM and 66–1100 in-lbs of torque with a hollow output shaft.
  • DC 750 Series Right Angle Gear Motors, built for harsh environments with TENV construction, offering 20–360 RPM and 14–130 in-lbs of torque, also with a hollow output shaft for straightforward installation.

These motors are suited to a wide range of switchgear applications, from auto-transfer systems for reliable power distribution, to submersible configurations for vaults and wet environments, padmount assemblies for simplified installation, and designs that enhance safety and enable remote operation.

By combining advanced engineering with dedicated customer support, Bison is equipping OEMs with the tools they need to deliver the next generation of reliable, efficient, and resilient switchgear systems.
