The drive for smaller, more functional electronic assemblies, along with the need for high reliability electronics requires clean circuit boards to function properly. Highly dense circuit designs are increasingly populated with small passive chip cap components.
Published research documents the importance of cleaning when populating the circuit board with low clearance components and highly active lead-free solder fluxes. The purpose of this presentation was to help engineers identify the sources of residue and impact on reliability. Reliability problems such as conformal coating adhesion, low production yields, and electrical performance were presented
