Cervoz, a supplier of industrial grade memory and storage solutions, has unveiled two new high speed CAN FD expansion cards aimed at upgrading industrial communication systems that are hitting the limits of traditional serial interfaces.
The cards — the dual-channel MEC-CAN-2F02i and the quad-channel MEC-CAN-2F14i — are designed to support the faster and more data-intensive requirements of automated guided vehicles (AGVs), autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), robotics, and energy management systems.
In industrial networks, CAN Bus has long been favoured over RS-232/422/485 interfaces for its multi-node connectivity, real-time responsiveness, and error detection. However, the classic CAN 2.0 standard, restricted to 1 Mbps bandwidth and 8-byte payloads, is increasingly seen as a bottleneck in applications requiring rapid control loops and high data throughput.
CAN FD (Flexible Data-rate) addresses these limitations by boosting data-phase speeds up to 5 Mbps and expanding payload capacity to 64 bytes. It also maintains backward compatibility with existing CAN 2.0A/B devices, enabling a smoother transition for legacy systems.
Cervoz said each of its new expansion cards is engineered for demanding industrial environments, offering 2.5 kV isolation, 15 kV ESD protection, and an operating temperature range from –40°C to +85°C. Both models comply with ISO 11898-1:2015 standards and are suited to continuous 24/7 operation.
The MEC-CAN-2F02i uses an M.2 2280 (B+M key) format with DB-9 connectors, while the MEC-CAN-2F14i features a modular, breakaway 3-in-1 design supporting 2242, 2260, and 2280 form factors. The cards connect via PCIe x1 Rev. 2.0 and support Windows 7–11 and Linux SocketCAN, with an SDK available for developers.
Cervoz said the MEC-CAN-2F14i targets high-density, multi-channel systems, whereas the MEC-CAN-2F02i is optimised for compact, low-power configurations. For users maintaining existing CAN 2.0 infrastructure, the company continues to offer compatible models under its MEC-CAN-2802i and MEC-CAN-2814i lines.
With the launch, Cervoz aims to position its CAN FD series as a core connectivity solution for next-generation industrial automation, energy, and transport systems.
