Moxa to unveil EtherCAT and Ethernet APL innovations at SPS 2025

Moxa Europe will introduce new EtherCAT and Ethernet APL (Advanced Physical Layer) technologies at SPS 2025 in Nuremberg, marking an expansion of its industrial networking and communications portfolio.

The Taiwanese group’s latest EtherCAT products include the EJS series of junctions and the MGate 5216 gateway range.

The junctions allow for flexible network topologies—such as star, line, ring, and tree—while supporting redundant power inputs for continuous operation.

Moxa said the devices, certified by the EtherCAT Technology Group and Test Center, are built to withstand harsh industrial conditions thanks to their metal housings, electromagnetic compatibility, and wide operating temperature range.

The MGate 5216 gateways are designed to connect Modbus and serial devices to EtherCAT networks. They feature dual serial ports and built-in diagnostic tools, with configuration handled through a web interface. The gateways comply with IEC 62443-4-2 cybersecurity standards and support MicroPython for programming proprietary serial protocols.

For the first time, Moxa will also present Ethernet APL switches, which transmit data and power over a single cable. Operating at 10Mbps in full-duplex mode over distances of up to 1,000 metres, Ethernet APL is aimed at enhancing speed and reliability in process automation, including hazardous environments where intrinsic safety and explosion protection are required.

Moxa will also display its wider industrial cybersecurity portfolio, including switches, firewalls, and intrusion prevention systems. The company said the solutions align with IEC 62443-4-2 standards, supporting compliance with the EU’s NIS-2 Directive and the Cyber Resilience Act.
