A British farm is turning pig slurry into the renewable electricity that powers artificial-intelligence data centres – a model that can multiply a farm’s energy income up to tenfold, cut the payback time on green-energy equipment from around 15 years to roughly four, and now pays farmers in cryptocurrency as well as pounds through the Green Compute network.

As warnings mount over the vast energy demands of artificial intelligence, a British company is offering an unlikely answer: power it with farm waste. Easy Compute, the company behind the Green Compute network, builds, installs and runs the high-performance computers that AI relies on, and places them on farms where renewable energy is generated on-site – starting with a site in the North West that converts pig slurry into clean electricity.

The model effectively turns a farm into a miniature, green-powered data centre. Rather than exporting surplus renewable energy to the grid for a modest return, farmers use it to run AI computing hardware that commands a far higher price – a shift the company likens to “an Airbnb for computers,” where spare capacity is rented out by the minute to businesses that need it.

Ten times the income, a quarter of the wait

The economics are the headline for farmers. Selling renewable electricity to the grid typically earns around 8–12p per kilowatt-hour. Using that same electricity to power AI computing through the Green Compute network can be worth as much as ten times more, according to Easy Compute. That changes the maths on the green-energy equipment itself: the company says the return-on-investment timeline on an anaerobic digester and associated kit can fall from a typical 12–15 years to around four.

The company reports that its highest-performing farm partners – those who have invested in larger installations – are now earning tens of thousands of pounds a month from compute, transforming a piece of environmental infrastructure into a serious revenue line.

From pig muck to Bittensor: farms earning cryptocurrency

Beyond renting computing power to businesses, Green Compute connects its farm-based hardware to decentralised AI networks – most notably Bittensor, the blockchain protocol that rewards contributors of machine intelligence and computing power with its native cryptocurrency, TAO.

In practice, that means a farm’s slurry-powered servers can earn in two ways at once: conventional pay-as-you-go rental income from businesses, and cryptocurrency rewards for contributing verified green compute to networks like Bittensor. Because Bittensor rewards are paid around the clock, farm hardware never sits idle – when commercial demand dips, the machines switch to earning crypto instead.

Green Compute believes this makes British farms some of the greenest participants in the decentralised AI economy – a sector often criticised for its energy footprint – with every unit of compute traceable back to verified renewable generation.

A cleaner answer to AI’s energy problem

The launch lands against a backdrop of growing concern about the environmental cost of AI, with the power and water consumption of large data centres under increasing scrutiny. Green Compute’s pitch is a decentralised, green-by-design alternative: instead of concentrating computing in a handful of energy-hungry mega-sites, it distributes it across farms and renewable sites where the power is already clean and generated where it is used.

Every site on the Green Compute network must prove its energy is genuinely renewable before it earns anything – a deliberate contrast, the company says, to AI operations that buy carbon offsets after the fact rather than running on clean power in the first place. The first wave of sites is in the UK, running on biogas produced from agricultural waste.
