Intec Robotics, an Italy-based specialist in robotic machines for surface finishing, has adopted UK-based Fortress Safety’s RFID-enabled tGard interlocks to enhance operator protection.
The company, which supplies robots used in polishing, grinding, linishing, and deburring, said the interlocks were deployed in machines serving industries including aerospace, automotive, orthopaedics, and musical instrument production.
Michele Minetti, Sales & Marketing Director at Intec Robotics, said that while robotic systems deliver consistent, high-quality finishes, human operators remain at risk when accessing machines for setup, adjustment, or troubleshooting. Hazards include exposure to moving parts, unexpected start-ups, and the potential for operators to become trapped.
tGard interlocks are designed for narrow mounting areas and can integrate pushbuttons, emergency stops, and escape releases into a single unit, helping to streamline operations and reduce the potential for error.
Minetti added that Intec was among the first manufacturers to adopt the tGard HLC (High Level Coded) version, which combines RFID actuators with advanced guard monitoring up to PLe. The system prevents attempts to defeat the interlock and ensures machines cannot restart until all keys are accounted for and guards are closed, providing a robust safety solution for highly automated production environments.
