Australia’s renewable push boosted as Wärtsilä installs large-scale BESS for Flow Power

Wärtsilä, the Finnish energy technology group, has secured a contract to deliver a 100 MW / 223 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) for Australian renewable energy retailer Flow Power, marking the company’s tenth such project in the country.

The Bennetts Creek facility, to be built adjacent to Victoria’s Morwell Terminal Station, will provide essential ancillary services, including frequency regulation, to strengthen grid stability and support Australia’s transition to renewable energy. The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2025.

“This project demonstrates how advanced batteries can deliver both reliability and revenue,” said Suraj Narayan, Managing Director of Wärtsilä Energy Storage Australia. “As the National Electricity Market transitions to a lower-carbon system with increasing variable renewable energy, systems with strong frequency response capabilities, like Bennetts Creek, will be ideally positioned to tap into these new high-value opportunities.”

The battery will use Wärtsilä’s Quantum hardware, a modular and compact energy storage system, alongside the company’s GEMS software, which optimises energy dispatch and grid integration. The project will be delivered under an engineered equipment delivery contract, with Wärtsilä providing guaranteed performance under a long-term service agreement.

Tom Harrison, Flow Power’s General Manager of Energy Projects, said the project would strengthen the company’s portfolio and support additional renewable projects in Victoria. “The Bennetts Creek Battery is a significant milestone for Flow Power,” he said.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the facility expected to be operational by 2028. Once complete, Wärtsilä will expand its local footprint to more than 6 GWh of capacity, reinforcing its position as a Tier 1 integrator in Australia.
