The certificates were awarded to Jake Mellor and Jamie Kemp, first-year apprentices at A&J Fabtech, and to the site installation manager, Carl Tierney, in recognition of their help with the new ramp and steps to the organisation’s toilet block.
Kirklees DofE organises several activities at its Little Deer Wood centre and encourages the participation of people with disabilities. Therefore, it was important to provide them with accessible facilities, including ramps to enter the bathroom.
The DofE scheme is backed by British employers and organisations who share the goal of investing in the future of young people. A&J Fabtech, by providing steel work for civil engineering and continuously training young people, contributed with its engineering expertise. The two apprentices, supervised by Carl, were responsible for the implementation of the whole project, from design, to manufacture, assembly, and on-site fitting.
Carl Tierney commented: “By supporting the DofE, our apprentices developed their confidence, motivation and engineering skills, while helping the local community. This was our first volunteering project with Kirklees DofE and we’ll be happy to continue supporting the organisation with future collaborations.”
