Comau showcases new collaborative robotics as EU project targets next-generation manufacturing

Comau has unveiled new collaborative robotic systems as part of an EU-backed effort to develop more flexible, human-centric manufacturing technologies.

The Italian automation group is a key contributor to the CONVERGING project, a multi-year initiative funded by the European Union to integrate cobots, autonomous guided vehicles, AI systems, and human workers into reconfigurable production lines.

At a project review on 5th November in Patras, Greece, Comau presented two prototypes developed at its Turin headquarters to project partners and representatives from the European Commission.

The first, a medium-payload version of Comau’s MyCo collaborative robot, is designed for post-processing additive-manufactured components. The company said the system combines human-safe operation with the precision and adaptability required in advanced industrial environments.

Comau’s second pilot focuses on the aerospace sector. The group has engineered a remote inspection robot capable of non-invasive aircraft wing assessments, a task traditionally carried out manually. The system, which uses a 6-axis MyCo cobot, incorporates precision mechanics, advanced kinematics, and remote-control capabilities aimed at improving the accuracy and safety of inspection procedures, reducing maintenance time, and streamlining the aircraft upkeep cycle.

Nicole Clement, Chief Advanced Automation Solutions Officer at Comau, said the project represented “a strategic effort to enable next-generation manufacturing by promoting reconfigurability, efficiency, and human-centric automation”. She added that Comau intended to use its experience in robotics and industrial automation, together with its expanding range of cobots and autonomous mobile robots, to help shape future production and maintenance technologies.

Comau, headquartered in Turin and part of the Stellantis group, operates seven innovation centres and eleven manufacturing plants across eleven countries, employing about 3,800 people. Its subsidiary Automha specialises in intralogistics and automated warehousing systems, with operations in Italy and China.
