UK Power Networks Services secures nuclear win at Sizewell C

UK Power Networks Services has been appointed to deliver the detailed design of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for the Construction Electrical Supplies (CES) at Sizewell C nuclear power station, marking a significant milestone in the firm’s growing presence within the UK nuclear sector.

This appointment endorses the capability of experienced teams to deliver high integrity control systems for complex and safety critical environments, supporting one of the UK’s most important infrastructure programmes.

The scope of works covers end to end SCADA design for the CES electrical network, enabling the safe and resilient supply of power during construction activities across the site.

Works include designing how the electrical network is controlled and monitored, covering:

  • The main substation where electricity enters the site
  • Smaller substations that distribute power around the site
  • A secure communications network that connects all parts of the system

The new infrastructure will also allow operators to oversee the power network in real time and safely control it remotely from an on-site control room.

This project highlights UK Power Networks Services’ ability to deliver reliable and safe control systems for complex, highly regulated environments like nuclear infrastructure. It also demonstrates the company’s expertise in bringing together electrical systems, communications, and cybersecurity into one complete solution.

Theo Mantzioros, systems design manager at UK Power Networks Services said: “This is a strong endorsement of our SCADA and communication systems capability in a nuclear context. Sizewell C is a nationally-recognised project, and this commission reflects the trust placed in our team to deliver robust, safe and future ready solutions for critical power infrastructure.”

Graham Funnell, area network delivery lead at Sizewell C, said: “This is a key step in making sure we can safely and reliably power activity right across the site as we build. UK Power Networks’ expertise and experience in complex, high-integrity systems will give our teams confidence that we’ve got a resilient, secure setup in place from day one.”
