Universal Robots has launched a redesigned robotics platform aimed at making it easier to deploy AI-enabled applications in industrial automation, with new robot arms, controllers, software and interfaces.
The seventh-generation platform, launched at the IMTS trade show in Chicago, introduces a new control box, teach pendant and tool flange alongside three new robot arms. Universal Robots, part of Teradyne Robotics, said the changes are intended to reduce integration complexity as manufacturers begin deploying more AI-based applications on the factory floor.
The new g-Series arms – the UR10g-1750, UR17g-1300 and UR18g-950 – have a redesigned tool flange that provides data, power and safety connections for vision and sensing equipment. The company said this is intended to simplify the connection of cameras and high-bandwidth sensors needed for applications such as machine vision and Physical AI.
The arms also incorporate force-torque sensing, impedance control and Real-Time Data Exchange (RTDE), supporting applications including dexterous manipulation and force-sensitive assembly.
At the centre of the platform is the CB7 Core controller, which Universal Robots says provides 40% more computing power in a footprint 30% smaller than its previous generation. It supports multiple network connections to PLCs, HMIs, manufacturing execution systems, industrial PCs and vision systems, reducing the need for external network switches.
The controller can be supplied as a standalone unit or in a compact version for installation inside an automation cabinet, and is also compatible with the company’s existing e-Series and UR Series robot arms.
Gen 7 runs on Universal Robots’ PolyScope X operating system, which provides open APIs and ROS2 communication for integrating external computing and AI applications. Additional software packages support technologies including OPC-UA and ProfiSafe, while third-party applications can be accessed through the platform.
The new TP7 Core teach pendant is more than 20% lighter than previous generations and includes a full HD display, configurable buttons and a virtual joystick. A new SP7 Smart Panel provides controls at the robot’s tool flange, allowing operators to teach and programme the robot at the point of work.
Universal Robots said the platform also incorporates safety and cybersecurity measures, including a PLd, Category 3 architecture certified to ISO 13849-1. The g-Series robots are certified to ISO 10218-1 and UL1740, while Teradyne Robotics is certified to IEC 62443-4-1 ML3 for secure product development.
The launch is being demonstrated at IMTS alongside more than 20 ecosystem partners, including Cognex, Schunk, Magswitch, Robotiq and Inbolt. Universal Robots said the demonstrations are intended to show how its open architecture can integrate machine vision, gripping and other Physical AI technologies with its robots.
More than 100,000 Universal Robots cobots have been sold worldwide, according to the company.
