Emerson has launched a Rosemount gas analyser that combines laser-based and paramagnetic measurement technologies in a single platform certified for use in hazardous areas.
The Rosemount QX1400 Continuous Gas Analyzer is designed for applications including continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS), natural gas quality monitoring and gas purity measurement in industries such as LNG, chemicals and petrochemicals.
Emerson describes the QX1400 as the world’s first hybrid device of its type to receive hazardous-area certification. In Europe, the analyser is certified to ATEX II 2G Ex d IIB H2 T4 and IECEx Ex db IIB+H2 T4 Gb standards. North American certification for Class 1, Division 2, Groups B, C, D, T4 is expected by the end of 2026.
The analyser combines paramagnetic detection for oxygen with quantum cascade laser direct absorption spectroscopy (QCL-DAS) for other gases.
The company says the approach is intended to provide the measurement performance required for applications where oxygen monitoring is critical, including LNG, carbon capture and underground storage (CCUS), ethylene production and hydrogen processing.
The QX1400 can be configured to measure one to four gases, with standard configurations covering CO, CO₂, O₂, NO, NO₂ and SO₂. Emerson also offers configurations for gases including methane and nitrous oxide.
The hazardous-area certification could affect how the equipment is installed. Emerson says the QX1400 can be installed in certain hazardous areas without additional protection such as explosion-proof or purged enclosures.
That could reduce the complexity and cost of installation and, in some applications, allow the analyser to be positioned closer to the sampling point. Shorter sampling distances can help reduce costs and improve measurement accuracy, according to the company.
“Gas analysis applications should not require users to choose between the measurement technology they need and the hazardous-area installation their site demands,” said Beth Livingstone, Global Product Manager for process gas at Emerson. “The Rosemount QX1400 brings complementary technologies together in one certified platform to simplify system design, while providing the measurements required for critical emissions, quality and purity applications.”
The QX1400 expands Emerson’s existing QX analyser range, with the company positioning the platform as a single-system alternative for applications requiring multiple gas measurements and hazardous-area operation.
